Job Overview
The Junior Legal Advisor will support the Legal Services Department within Discovery Invest and Discovery Corporate and Employee Benefits. This role is ideal for a recent LLB graduate or someone currently studying law who wants to gain experience in financial services, retirement funds and investment law.
The successful candidate will assist with legal research, regulatory interpretation, legal documentation and retirement fund matters, while gaining valuable exposure to section 37C death claims, group risk schemes and financial services regulation.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal and regulatory support to the Discovery Invest and Discovery Corporate and Employee Benefits businesses
- Conduct legal research on legislation, case law and regulatory developments
- Assist with preparing legal opinions, internal publications and legal updates
- Support legal advisory work relating to investments, retirement funds and group risk schemes
- Assist with the implementation of regulatory requirements and compliance processes
- Prepare and maintain legal documents, templates and internal communications
- Support section 37C death benefit investigations and claims processes
- Analyse information and prepare draft recommendations and resolutions for review
- Assist with complaints and disputes, including responses to matters before the Pension Funds Adjudicator
- Ensure all legal work is completed accurately and in line with internal standards and applicable laws
- Support the Legal Services Department with administrative and coordination tasks
Qualifications
Education
- Matric
- Currently studying towards or recently completed an LLB degree or similar legal qualification
Experience
- No previous experience required, although exposure to legal administration or financial services will be advantageous
- Interest in retirement funds, financial services law or insurance law is essential
Skills
- Strong legal research and information-gathering ability
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Good organisational and administrative skills
- Ability to follow instructions and work within structured processes
- Good time-management skills and ability to meet deadlines
