Job Overview

SMEC is seeking a Civil Engineer – Roads and Highways to support design and drafting activities across planning, conceptual, and detailed design stages.

The role involves working on road geometry, civil infrastructure modelling, and construction documentation while supporting senior engineers and occasionally taking the lead on project components. The position is based in Cape Town or George and involves both technical design and client-facing responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver civil design and modelling for Roads & Highways projects
• Produce planning, conceptual, detailed design, and construction drawings
• Support geometric road design and related civil infrastructure work
• Assist in supervising technicians, graduates, and draughting teams
• Work collaboratively within project teams and take design lead when required
• Maintain drawing standards and ensure compliance with quality systems
• Prepare tender documentation, bids, specifications, and BoQs
• Develop cost estimates and technical reports
• Liaise with clients and municipal departments to capture requirements
• Support senior engineers in project management activities
• Ensure adherence to engineering codes, standards, and procedures

Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) or equivalent degree from an accredited institution

Experience

• Minimum 3 years of civil engineering experience
• Experience in roads and highways design is essential
• Exposure to project coordination or small team supervision is advantageous

Skills

• Proficiency in Civil 3D
• Experience with Bentley MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer (advantageous)
• Strong understanding of road geometry and civil design principles
• Ability to produce BoQs, specifications, and cost estimates
• Strong report writing and technical documentation skills
• Basic project management knowledge
• Strong planning and workload management ability
• Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and client-facing environments
