Job Overview

The Human Resource Business Partner (HRBP) plays a strategic and operational role in aligning HR practices with business objectives within a fast-paced, unionized manufacturing environment. This position partners closely with leadership and line management to deliver end-to-end HR services, ensuring compliance, employee engagement, and high performance across the organisation.


Key Responsibilities

Operational HR & Employee Relations

  • Provide end-to-end HR support across the employee lifecycle
  • Act as the primary HR contact for line managers
  • Manage disciplinary, grievance, misconduct, incapacity, and performance processes
  • Ensure consistent application of HR policies and procedures
  • Build strong relationships with employees, management, and shop stewards

Labour Relations (Unionized Environment)

  • Support labour relations within a unionized manufacturing setting
  • Liaise with unions and shop stewards
  • Prepare for and attend hearings, grievances, and consultations
  • Advise management on compliance with LRA, BCEA, EEA, and agreements

Absenteeism & Attendance Management

  • Monitor and analyse absenteeism trends
  • Support corrective actions and counselling processes
  • Manage medical incapacity and ill-health cases
  • Ensure compliance and proper documentation

Talent Acquisition & Workforce Planning

  • Support recruitment aligned with business needs and EE targets
  • Identify critical roles and skills gaps
  • Contribute to workforce planning strategies

Performance, Talent & Development

  • Coach managers on performance management processes
  • Ensure KPIs/KPAs are in place and monitored
  • Drive performance reviews and development plans
  • Support succession planning and retention strategies

Employee Engagement & Wellness

  • Support engagement initiatives and workplace culture
  • Promote wellness and Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP)
  • Assist with internal communication and change initiatives

HR Governance & Compliance

  • Prepare HR reports and maintain data accuracy
  • Support audits and compliance processes
  • Maintain HR records, job profiles, and organograms
  • Identify HR risks and improvement opportunities

Leadership & Decision-Making

  • Provide sound HR advice and decision-making support
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives
  • Promote ethical leadership and company values

Qualifications

Education:

  • National Diploma or Degree in Human Resources, Industrial Psychology, or related field
  • Postgraduate qualification in HR/Industrial Relations (advantageous)

Experience:

  • 5–7 years HR generalist experience
  • Minimum 3 years in a unionized manufacturing or industrial environment
  • Strong exposure to labour relations and disciplinary processes

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of South African labour legislation (LRA, BCEA, EEA)
  • Excellent advisory, coaching, and influencing skills
  • Strong stakeholder and relationship management ability
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • High attention to detail and ability to work under pressure
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
