Job Overview
Tetra Tech is seeking an Energy System Studies Engineer – Analyst to support the implementation of energy and power system projects around the world. This remote role will report to the Senior Director in South Africa and will involve supporting technical studies, preparing reports, conducting site measurements, and contributing to business development activities.
The successful candidate will work with senior engineers on grid integration, system stability, renewable energy modelling, and advanced power system studies while gaining exposure to international energy projects.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Responsibilities
- Support senior team members with power system analysis, including:
- Load flow studies
- Short circuit studies
- Dynamic and transient stability analysis
- Harmonics and protection studies
- Arc flash studies
- Electromagnetic transient switching studies
- Insulation coordination studies
- Use specialist software such as:
- PSS/E
- DIgSILENT PowerFactory
- ETAP
- PSCAD
- EMTDC
- Assist with governor and AVR modelling, including user-defined models.
- Support modelling of battery storage, wind energy, and solar PV systems.
- Assist with modelling of:
- SVC
- SCO
- STATCOM
- Grid-forming inverters
- Help automate simulation studies using Python.
- Assist with high-level substation and overhead line design for feasibility studies.
- Analyse simulation outputs and technical test data.
- Prepare technical summaries, observations, and reports for review.
Project Management Responsibilities
- Conduct research and gather technical data for reports and presentations.
- Coordinate with experts from other Tetra Tech business units when required.
- Support the preparation of client deliverables.
Business Development Responsibilities
- Support senior staff with technical inputs for proposals and expressions of interest.
- Assist with business development, proposal writing, and marketing activities.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelorโs Degree in Engineering.
Preferred Education
- Postgraduate qualification in Engineering.
Experience
- Previous experience in a technical role within an energy consulting or engineering environment is advantageous.
- Experience with power system studies or renewable energy modelling is beneficial.
Technical Skills
- Knowledge of Python programming.
- Strong IT skills and advanced proficiency in:
- Microsoft Word
- Microsoft Excel
- Microsoft PowerPoint
- Microsoft Teams
- Understanding of power system analysis tools and concepts.
- Ability to research technical problems and apply first-principles engineering thinking.

Work Environment
- Fully remote position based in South Africa.
- Standard working hours are Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 17:30 local time.
- Flexibility may be required to overlap with United States Eastern Standard Time business hours.
- Occasional in-person team meetings and company events may be required.
Travel Requirements
- International travel may be required for up to 20% of the time.
- Travel may include visits to:

- National control centres
- Substations
- Project sites

CV Tips
