Job Overview

Stethoscope SA is seeking a Registered Nurse – Recovery for a hospital-based surgical recovery unit in Pretoria. The role involves providing post-operative care to patients recovering from anaesthesia and surgery, ensuring safe, high-quality, and evidence-based nursing care.

The successful candidate will monitor patient recovery, manage clinical risks, and support the surgical team in delivering optimal patient outcomes. This role requires strong clinical judgement, attention to detail, and experience in post-operative care.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide safe, cost-effective, and high-quality patient care in recovery
  • Assess, plan, execute, and evaluate post-operative nursing care
  • Monitor patient vital signs and physiological parameters after surgery
  • Support patients during recovery from anaesthesia and surgical procedures
  • Ensure all patients have appropriate nursing care plans
  • Prepare and manage recovery room stock and surgical supplies
  • Check and maintain emergency equipment and resuscitation drugs
  • Ensure accurate and timely clinical documentation and reporting
  • Maintain infection prevention and control standards at all times
  • Promote patient comfort, privacy, and safety during recovery
  • Communicate effectively with patients regarding their care
  • Identify and report clinical risks or complications
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and compliant recovery environment
  • Participate in clinical governance and continuous quality improvement
  • Mentor junior nursing staff and support team development

Qualifications

Education

  • Grade 12 (NQF Level 4)
  • Diploma in General Nursing

Registration

  • Registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC)

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Registered Nurse
  • Experience in post-operative and surgical nursing required

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of surgical and recovery room procedures
  • Patient monitoring and post-anaesthesia care expertise
  • Infection prevention and control knowledge
  • Strong problem-solving and clinical judgement skills
  • Ability to assess, analyse, and respond to patient conditions

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ACLS) competency
