Job Description:

Anglo American is seeking a Water Resource Coordinator to oversee the management and monitoring of water resources at the Mogalakwena Complex. This role will focus on supporting the implementation of the Site Water Management Plan and ensuring compliance with Water Use License requirements. As a key player in the environmental team, you will contribute to water quality and quantity monitoring, environmental reporting, and the continuous improvement of water management practices.

Key Responsibilities:

Water Data Collection & Analysis:

  • Facilitate the collection of water quantity and quality data from various sources (with support from the Environmental/Water Assistant).
  • Maintain water database inputs, water balance, and operational water dashboard under the guidance of the Senior Engineer Water Resources.
  • Evaluate data for accuracy, investigate discrepancies, and escalate issues when necessary.

Water Performance Reporting:

  • Prepare and submit quarterly reports to the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) in line with water permits and compliance standards.
  • Liaise with hydrogeological consultants to monitor wellfield management and performance.
  • Interpret and report on wellfield performance regularly, ensuring all water-related data is accurate and reliable.

Environmental Water Monitoring:

  • Conduct environmental monitoring and inspections of dams, silt traps, streams, and groundwater in the mine and surrounding areas.
  • Monitor pollution control measures on surface water, groundwater, tailings dams, and return water dams.
  • Oversee water sampling campaigns and ensure compliance with EMPR, DWS Section 21 permits, and other water quality regulations.

Water Use License Compliance:

  • Monitor compliance with water use license requirements and ensure proper flow metering and instrumentation audits.
  • Identify and report non-compliance issues in the SAP system, facilitating necessary maintenance and improvements.
  • Collaborate with the Environmental Coordinator to report water-related incidents and implement corrective actions as needed.

Reporting and Documentation:

  • Draft technical reports and graphs on water management and performance.
  • Assist with the tender and supply chain processes and prepare scope of work documents for consultants.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Water Science, Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Water Resource Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in a water-related field or civil engineering.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation such as the MHSA, Minerals Act, National Water Act, and Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Experience with water management schemes and understanding of water chemistry and catchment management is advantageous.
  • Valid Code EB (Code 8) Driver’s License.

Experience, Knowledge & Skills:

Technical Proficiency:

  • Strong experience in water quality sampling campaigns and investigations.
  • Good understanding of surface water-groundwater interactions and basin-scale water quality management.

Communication & Reporting:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, with strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate technical reports.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Familiar with water quality regulations and experience ensuring compliance with DWS and environmental standards.

Additional Skills:

  • Risk identification and analysis expertise.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to troubleshoot water data discrepancies.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining a focus on safety, sustainability, and compliance.
