Researcher: Exciting Plant Breeding of Leafy and/or Fruit Vegetables | ARC-VIMP

The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a leading scientific institution dedicated to research, human capital development, and innovation in support of the agricultural sector in South Africa. With a wide array of services ranging from diagnostics to post-harvest technology development, the ARC plays a crucial role in advancing agricultural practices and knowledge.

As part of a new project funded by the National Department Of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development at Roodeplaat, the ARC-VIMP is seeking to fill the following position:

Researcher – Plant Breeding of Leafy and/or Fruit Vegetables Contract Type: Three Years (3) Fixed Term Contract

Key Responsibilities:

• Initiate and manage research projects ensuring compliance with standards, client needs, budget, and deadlines.
• Design experiments, execute them timely, capture and analyze data, and report findings according to scientific standards and ARC’s Corporate Strategy.
• Identify and secure new research opportunities, including external funding.
• Provide leadership, supervision, mentoring, and training to postgraduate students, research technicians, and assistants.
• Efficient human resource management and objective performance assessments.
• Budget compilation and management in compliance with ARC’s financial procedures.
• Disseminate technology through various channels including peer-reviewed publications, popular articles, and media engagements.
• Ensure compliance with Human Resource and Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures.

Requirements:

• PhD in Plant Breeding or related disciplines. Alternatively, an MSc with five years of work experience and currently pursuing a PhD in a relevant field.
• Experience in classical plant breeding techniques; molecular plant breeding experience is advantageous.
• Experience in leafy and/or fruit vegetable crops is desirable.
• Minimum of two peer-reviewed publications relevant to the position; evidence of popular article publications is advantageous.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, achieve objectives, and effectively report findings.
• Experience in project management and participation in national projects.
• Experience in postgraduate student mentoring or supervision is advantageous.
• Personnel management experience is desirable.
• Valid driver’s license.
