Key Responsibilities:
- Initiate and Manage Research Projects: To ensure successful completion within set standards, client needs, budget, and timelines, initiate and manage research projects. This involves identifying research gaps, formulating hypotheses, designing experiments, overseeing data collection, analysis, and interpretation, and presenting findings effectively.
- Design and Execute Experiments: Design experiments, execute them timely, capture and analyze data, and report findings in accordance with scientific standards and ARC’s Corporate Strategy. This includes developing experimental protocols, ensuring adherence to ethical guidelines, utilizing state-of-the-art equipment and methodologies, and preparing comprehensive reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Identify and Secure New Research Opportunities: Stay updated on emerging trends and funding opportunities in plant breeding, cultivate collaborations with industry partners, government agencies, and academic institutions, and prepare grant proposals to support research initiatives.
- Provide Leadership and Supervision: Provide leadership, supervision, mentoring, and training to postgraduate students, research technicians, and assistants. Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment, offer professional development opportunities, and promote a culture of excellence and continuous learning.
- Efficient Human Resource Management: Recruit, train, and manage personnel effectively, delegate tasks appropriately to optimize productivity, conduct regular performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and address any issues or concerns in a timely manner.
- Budget Compilation and Management: Develop annual budgets for research projects, monitor expenditures, identify cost-saving measures, ensure compliance with financial policies and regulations, and liaise with finance departments to address any budgetary issues or discrepancies.
- Disseminate Technology and Findings: Prepare manuscripts for publication in scientific journals, write articles for industry magazines or newsletters, participate in conferences and workshops to share research findings, and engage with the media to communicate the impact of research outcomes to broader audiences.
- Ensure Compliance with Policies: Promote a safe and healthy work environment, conduct risk assessments, implement safety protocols and procedures, provide training on health and safety practices, and address any concerns related to employee well-being or workplace safety promptly.
Requirements:
- PhD in Plant Breeding/genetics/quantitative genetics or related disciplines.
- Experience in applying quantitative genetics principles to breeding.
- Knowledge and experience using genomics and latest breeding technologies is highly desired.
- Alternatively, an MSc with five years of work experience and currently pursuing a PhD in a relevant field.
- Experience in classical plant breeding techniques and genomic analysis.
- Experience in molecular plant breeding techniques is advantageous.
- Experience in leafy, seed, and/or fruit vegetable crops is desirable.
- Minimum of two peer-reviewed publications relevant to the position; evidence of popular article publications is advantageous.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, achieve objectives, and effectively report findings.
- Experience in project management and participation in national projects.
- Experience in postgraduate student mentoring or supervision is advantageous.
- Personnel management experience is desirable.
- Valid driver’s license.
