π Financial Sector Policy Research & Development

Conduct policy research to support a robust financial sector regulatory framework.

Strengthen consumer education, financial literacy, and consumer protection initiatives.

Support policies that promote competition, innovation, and market development.

Assist in reforms targeting fintech, mobile money, digital payments, and new market entrants.

Contribute to policies aimed at expanding access to financial services for underserved communities.

Work closely with internal directorates on cross-cutting regulatory and consumer awareness issues.

Engage with regulators, financial institutions, fintech players, and industry experts.

Support multisectoral collaboration to create a stable and inclusive financial sector.

Provide input on regulatory frameworks that foster innovation and competition.

Provide research-driven insights into policy and legislative initiatives.

This role plays a critical part in shaping South Africaβs evolving financial landscape. As financial technology rapidly expands and new digital players enter the market, the National Treasury is strengthening its policy capacity to ensure innovation aligns with financial stability, inclusion, and consumer protection.
The Assistant Director will be deeply involved in researching global trends in fintech, digital payments, crypto-assets, open banking, and retail credit affordability practices. The position requires a strong balance between analytical skills and policy drafting ability, ensuring that new frameworks support both innovation and regulatory stability. The role also contributes to national initiatives aimed at making financial services more accessible, affordable, and transparent for all South Africans.
You will influence policy areas that impact millions of consumers and financial institutions, helping to shape reforms that modernize the financial sector. This includes reviewing compliance trends, evaluating the impact of regulatory changes, and advising on improvements that maintain a safe but competitive financial environment.
