Job Overview

The Agricultural Research Council is recruiting two Artisan Assistants to support maintenance and operational activities at its Pretoria facilities. The successful candidates will assist artisans and technical teams with the maintenance of assets, installation of equipment, and general workshop activities.

This role involves supporting electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and refrigeration tasks while ensuring tools, equipment, and infrastructure are maintained according to required standards and safety regulations.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with maintenance of assets and infrastructure to ensure operational efficiency

  • Support artisans in repairing equipment and maintaining facility infrastructure

  • Install new equipment and assist with related technical work

  • Assist with electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and refrigeration installations and repairs

  • Troubleshoot equipment issues and assist with problem-solving tasks

  • Ensure all tools and equipment are clean, functional, and used according to specifications

  • Assist with monitoring stock levels and maintaining tool registers

  • Ensure workshop areas are clean and compliant with operational standards

  • Comply with occupational health and safety regulations

  • Wear appropriate safety equipment during maintenance activities

  • Respond to job card requests and complete assigned maintenance tasks

  • Work overtime during emergency situations when required

  • Participate in standby duties when necessary


Qualifications

Education

  • Relevant technical or artisan-related qualification (advantageous)

Experience

  • Experience assisting artisans or working in maintenance, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical environments will be beneficial

Skills

  • Basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or refrigeration systems

  • Ability to use tools and equipment safely and effectively

  • Understanding of workshop safety procedures

  • Problem-solving and troubleshooting ability

  • Ability to work under supervision and follow technical instructions

  • Good organisational and teamwork skills
