Job Overview
The Control Instructor will play a dual role in technical laboratory management and academic support, ensuring that civil engineering laboratories operate efficiently while supporting student learning.
This role is ideal for experienced technologists with a passion for hands-on engineering, teaching, and laboratory innovation.
Key Responsibilities
π§ Technical & Instructional Duties
- Manage, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment
- Design and build specialised test setups and equipment
- Conduct and oversee testing projects and data analysis
- Prepare detailed technical reports
- Provide instruction to undergraduate and postgraduate students
- Develop and implement new practical experiments
- Analyse and process measurement data for performance evaluation
π Laboratory Management
- Manage laboratory operations, layout, and resources
- Oversee asset lifecycle management (procurement, maintenance, tracking)
- Supervise laboratory staff and ensure operational efficiency
- Maintain records of equipment and instruments
- Ensure availability of resources for lab activities
π Maintenance & Safety
- Perform maintenance, repair, and calibration of equipment
- Ensure compliance with OHS Act and safety regulations
- Act as laboratory safety officer
- Promote a strong safety culture within labs
π Additional Duties
- Assist with departmental administration
- Support open days, engineering week, and events
- Provide general departmental technical support
Qualifications
π Education
- Three-year technical qualification (T3, T4, BTech or equivalent)
- Advanced Technology Diploma or equivalent
πΌ Experience
- Minimum 3 yearsβ experience as a Technologist
- At least 5 yearsβ teaching or training experience
- Strong knowledge of OHS regulations and compliance
π Skills
- Strong technical and engineering problem-solving skills
- Ability to design and manage testing systems and equipment
- Proficiency in data analysis software
- Strong organisational and laboratory management skills
- Excellent communication and instructional abilities
β Advantageous
- BTech or ACT Diploma
- 10+ yearsβ experience as Technologist/Instructor
- Experience with complex/non-standard testing
- Certifications: Driverβs license, First Aid, Firefighting, OHS
