About the Role

North-West University (NWU) is seeking a highly skilled Data Scientist to join the South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR). This role is integral to advancing research and development in Human Language Technology (HLT) and Digital Humanities (DH). The successful candidate will lead research initiatives, contribute to national and international projects, and play a key role in mentoring and teaching in the field.

Key Responsibilities

Research & Development: Conduct research in Human Language Technology and Digital Humanities.
Project Leadership: Initiate and contribute to HLT and DH projects.
Teaching & Training: Provide academic instruction in relevant fields.
Mentorship: Guide and support students and researchers in the domain.
Conference & Publication Contributions: Present research findings nationally and internationally.

Minimum Requirements

PhD (NQF Level 10) in Computational Linguistics, Natural Language Processing, Human Language Technology, Digital Humanities, Data Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence, or related fields with a computational linguistics focus.
5+ years of experience in Python (or other programming languages relevant to computational linguistics/DH).
Proven academic track record with peer-reviewed publications.
3+ years of supervisory/mentorship experience in research or academia.
3+ years of experience in using and/or developing computational tools.
3+ years of research experience in Language Technology or Digital Humanities.
1+ year of teaching or training experience in HLT or DH.

Preferred Qualifications & Competencies

➕ Membership with academic subject communities.
Technical Skills: Advanced computer literacy, ability to lead research projects, grant writing, and report development.
Behavioral Skills: Ability to work independently and collaboratively, communicate effectively across diverse backgrounds, and contribute to multilingual research environments.
Passion for South African Languages: Strong interest in advancing under-resourced languages in South Africa.
