Role Overview

The Donor Care Officer is responsible for the safe collection of blood and blood products according to daily and monthly targets at fixed and mobile blood drives. This role blends clinical skill, donor relationship management, operational coordination, and strict compliance to SOPs and clinical standards. You will play a central role in ensuring both donor safety and the availability of essential blood products for medical use.

  • Monitor consumable trends and report discrepancies or unusual usage immediately.

2. Customer & Stakeholder Management

  • Represent SANBS professionally at blood drives and donor centres.

  • Welcome and assist donors throughout the registration and assessment process.

  • Guide donors through documentation, clarify questions, and ensure they understand pre-donation requirements.

  • Coach the team on donor experience, using complaints and compliments as learning tools.

  • Escalate donor concerns to the Clinic Supervisor before or at shift-end.

3. Internal Processes

  • Perform whole blood and apheresis collections to meet assigned targets.

  • Assist with loading, unloading, and setup of mobile drives.

  • Complete donor assessments, documentation, and data capturing according to SOP.

  • Conduct physical checks (pulse, BP, Hb screening) and document results accurately.

  • Conduct confidential risk behaviour interviews with donors.

  • Prepare blood packs, perform phlebotomy, monitor donors during and after donation, and provide care and refreshments.

  • Perform emergency first aid/CPR as needed, pending medical support.

  • Document all post-donation activities and ensure accurate reporting.

4. Learning & Growth

  • Temporarily perform Clinic Supervisor duties when needed.

  • Participate in regular staff meetings, discussions, and updates on policy, SOPs, and operational changes.

  • Support the Supervisor with training needs analysis and competency observations.

5. Governance & Compliance

  • Maintain updated staff and equipment files.

  • Ensure strict adherence to SHEQ and operational procedures.

  • Manage medical waste according to standards.

  • Maintain a safe environment for both donors and staff at all times.
