📢 Programme Overview

The Department of Science and Innovation – National Youth Service (DSTI-NYS) is a national initiative designed to empower unemployed graduates under the age of 35. Managed by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) under the National Research Foundation (NRF), this programme places graduates in partner institutions for 12 months, offering hands-on experience, mentorship, and monthly stipends.

The DSTI-NYS aims to:

  • Build a culture of community service and volunteerism

  • Equip young people with practical and professional skills

  • Boost employability and confidence

  • Support South Africa’s broader development goals

  • Provide a pathway out of long-term unemployment

Although the programme prioritises graduates from Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields, limited opportunities may also be available for graduates in Media, Communications, Journalism, and other fields based on recruitment needs.

🎓 Who Can Apply?

We are seeking committed and motivated young graduates with the following:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in:

    • Science

    • Technology

    • Engineering

    • Mathematics

    • Journalism

    • Media Studies

    • Communications

    • Or related fields

  • Strong computer literacy

  • Ability to work under pressure and manage time effectively

  • Excellent communication and organisational capabilities

  • Writing, radio, or television production skills (advantageous)

  • Good interpersonal and analytical skills

  • Demonstrated motivation and willingness to learn
