About the Role: Duty Controller

Are you passionate about aviation and operational excellence? South African Airways is looking for a dedicated Duty Controller to manage aircraft and crew operations across global routes. This pivotal role ensures the integrity of SAA’s flight schedules while minimizing the impact of irregular operations on passengers and the business.

As the Duty Controller, you’ll play a key role in keeping the airline’s operations smooth, safe, and efficient — ensuring every flight maintains on-time performance and meets safety standards. You’ll also act as a central communication point between internal departments and external service providers, working within a dynamic, fast-paced operational control center.


Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Oversee global aircraft and crew operations across time zones.

  • Optimize shift schedules and ensure proper shift handovers and coverage.

  • Identify, analyze, and resolve delays, operational disruptions, and irregularities.

  • Support in-flight crews tactically, enhancing safety and communication.

  • Coordinate with service providers, outstations, and regulatory authorities.

  • Ensure compliance with NOTAMs, aviation regulations, and scheduling systems.

  • Provide rapid recovery plans during irregular operations (IROPS).

  • Maintain and adjust the operational schedule using PegaSys and other systems.

  • Manage slot coordination with ATNS and parking bays with ACSA.

  • Analyze and implement cost-effective, passenger-centric solutions.

  • Facilitate joint decision-making across operations, crew, and ramp teams.


Minimum Qualifications & Experience:

  • Matric Certificate (Grade 12) with Maths at NQF level 4.

  • Bachelor’s Degree (NQF Level 7) OR 5–7 years of practical experience in an Operations Control Centre environment, with at least 5 years in a managerial role.

  • Certified training in:

    • ICAO Dispatcher

    • Dangerous Goods (Cat 10)

    • Aircraft Weight & Balance

    • Amadeus CM and FM

    • Passenger Handling and General Aircraft Training

  • In-depth knowledge of airline scheduling and operational recovery planning.


Skills & Competencies:

  • Advanced delay management and scheduling knowledge.

  • Familiarity with PegaSys MCS and reservation/departure control systems.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

  • Strong leadership and communication skills.

  • Analytical thinking with a focus on cost, safety, and compliance.

  • Team management and transformation leadership.

  • Working knowledge of SATCOM, ACARS, and industry codes (IATA, ICAO).
