Stellenbosch University is seeking an innovative and experienced professional to serve as the EMS Head: IT and Operations within the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. The EMS Faculty is one of South Africa’s leading academic institutions, dedicated to shaping future leaders in economics, management, and commerce. With a large and diverse student body, EMS requires sophisticated operational oversight and progressive IT leadership to drive digital transformation and maintain a high-functioning academic environment.

🎯 Role Purpose

The EMS Head: IT and Operations will oversee and align both the technological infrastructure and the physical learning environment across the Faculty. You will lead initiatives to improve operational performance, integrate innovation in service delivery, and foster a safe, modern, and inclusive campus experience.

This position reports to the Director: Faculty Management and forms a critical part of the Dean’s management team.

💼 Key Responsibilities

Strategic Development & Leadership

  • Develop and implement IT and facilities strategies aligned with the EMS and university-wide goals.

  • Drive innovation in learning spaces, digital infrastructure, and user experience.

IT Systems Management

  • Lead operations and maintenance of IT systems, networks, data servers, and security protocols.

  • Oversee access control, disaster recovery planning, and the seamless operation of digital services.

Campus & Learning Spaces

  • Manage and optimise public spaces, lecture halls, study areas, and computer user areas.

  • Ensure the campus remains welcoming, safe, and conducive to academic excellence.

Process & Project Management

  • Lead continuous improvement of workflows, implementing new systems and tools.

  • Oversee facility and IT-related projects from planning through to delivery.

Financial Oversight

  • Manage budgeting and expenditure for IT infrastructure and facilities.

  • Identify opportunities for cost efficiency and value creation.

Team Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Lead a high-performing support and operations team.

  • Collaborate with academic staff, students, and external vendors.

Risk & Crisis Management

  • Proactively address operational risks.

  • Coordinate crisis responses related to IT or physical infrastructure disruptions.

📘 Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma in:

    • Computer Science, Information Technology (with 5 years’ IT management experience), or

    • Business Administration or Commerce (with 8 years’ relevant IT leadership experience)

  • Strong knowledge of:

    • IT infrastructure, cybersecurity, network/cloud computing

    • Digital service delivery in large organisations

  • Proven leadership and project management experience

  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English

  • Honours or Master’s degree in IT or Business Administration

  • Professional certifications in ICT or Facility Management

  • Previous strategic leadership in a higher education environment

  • Knowledge of health and safety in facilities management
