About the Opportunity

Ladysmith Urgent Care Centre, part of Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA), invites qualified Family Practitioners to explore fulfilling permanent work in a collaborative, small-town urgent care environment. This opportunity is based in Ladysmith, a beautiful coastal town situated just 25 minutes from Nanaimo and 20 minutes from Duncan, BC.

This role is ideal for physicians passionate about emergency/urgent care medicine and who thrive in a supportive, collegial setting. You’ll enjoy the flexibility of shift-based work without overnight call responsibilities, working in a modern clinic equipped with advanced medical technologies.


Your Role and Responsibilities

As a Family Practitioner at Ladysmith Urgent Care, you will:

  • Provide culturally safe, patient-centred urgent care services.

  • Collaborate with a skilled inter-professional health care team.

  • Treat minor injuries and manage acute medical conditions.

  • Perform procedures such as cardioversion, intubation, casting, POCUS (point-of-care ultrasound), and procedural sedation.

  • Participate in a rural ER-style on-call schedule (flexible “come if needed” model).

  • POCUS (Sonosite), ECG, thrombolysis, X-ray, lab, slit lamp, and IV therapy capabilities.

Compensation and Incentives

  • Earnings: Over $2,500 per 7.5-hour shift (including fee-for-service + bonuses).

  • Bonuses: MOCAP & REEF (Approx. $375 per 7.5-hour shift).

  • Rural Retention Premium: 4.2% of all MSP billings.

  • Relocation Support: Up to $15,000 (based on distance relocated).

  • Recruitment Incentive: Up to $10,000 (prorated based on FTE).

  • CME Funding:

    • $2,200/year in years 3–4

    • $4,400/year after 4 years in the community


Qualifications and Requirements

  • Current license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC)

  • Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)

  • CCFP designation (Emergency Medicine experience preferred)

  • ATLS or CARE certification

  • Current ACLS certification

  • At least one PALS course completed

  • Comfortable with emergency/urgent care procedures

Trial shifts and buddy shifts are available to help new physicians transition into the role with ease.
