๐ Job Overview
BTT Richards Bay has an exciting permanent opportunity for a Safety Watch Charge Hand within the SHEP Department. The primary purpose of this role is to provide effective administrative, technical, and operational support related to Safety, Health, Environment, and Procedures (SHEP) while ensuring strict compliance with safety standards, procedures, and legislation.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the daily management, coordination, and monitoring of Safety Watchers, ensuring that all hazardous and high-risk activities are performed safely, compliantly, and efficiently. This role plays a critical part in maintaining a safe working environment within a chemical storage and manufacturing operations setting.
๐ Key Responsibilities

Allocate Safety Watchers efficiently to daily projects and site activities

Maintain and update resource allocation spreadsheets accurately

Communicate daily allocations and safety requirements to internal stakeholders

Distribute and communicate IMS and SHE documents to Safety Watchers

Capture standing time, attendance, and costings for Safety Watchers and service providers

Maintain and file Safety Watch attendance registers
-
Ensure all required inspections are conducted by Safety Watchers
-
Conduct toolbox talks and ensure proper sign-off and record keeping
-
Verify that gas monitoring equipment is calibrated and within service dates
-
Inspect Safety Watchersโ PPE and communication equipment

Perform Safety Watch duties on site when resources are insufficient

Inspect and monitor all hazardous and high-risk work activities
-
Monitor confined space work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (GSR 5)

Respond promptly to unsafe acts, hazardous conditions, and emergency situations

Conduct gas testing, hazard identification, and risk assessments
-
Operate firefighting equipment including extinguishers, hydrants, fixed monitors, and hose carts
๐ง Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
-
Ability to communicate fluently in English
-
Strong computer literacy, particularly in MS Office
-
Working knowledge of SHEQ systems including ISO 45001, ISO 14001, and ISO 9001

Knowledge and application of firefighting practices and fire prevention methods

Understanding of hazardous materials storage, handling, and usage

Strong attention to detail and compliance

Ability to work under pressure in high-risk environments

Excellent coordination, monitoring, and reporting skills
๐ Minimum Requirements

Grade 12 or equivalent qualification
-
Minimum of 2 yearsโ experience in a SHEQ, Safety Watch, or similar role

Minimum of 2 yearsโ experience within a chemical storage or manufacturing environment
-
SAMTRAC or Introduction to SAMTRAC will be advantageous
