๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ผ Role Overview

The Geotechnical Engineer โ€“ Underground will provide technical support across geotechnical and mining disciplines for the short-to-medium-term planning, design, and operational life cycles. You will identify geotechnical hazards, assess risks, and provide solutions to ensure underground stability and operational safety.


๐Ÿ“ Key Responsibilities

โš’ Engineering & Technical Support

  • Provide geotechnical engineering support to mining and engineering teams

  • Identify geotechnical hazards and opportunities using data analysis and underground inspections

  • Assist Senior Geotechnical Engineer / Manager in treating excavation stability and groundwater issues

  • Perform calculations, prepare design reports, and specifications for review and approval

  • Lead and guide underground rock investigations

  • Review and update geotechnical models with latest information

  • Apply quality control systems to all geotechnical schemes

๐Ÿ“Š Project & Planning Support

  • Attend and provide input at monthly Pre-Planning, Planning, Production, and technical meetings

  • Ensure geotechnical inputs integrate effectively with mine planning, survey, and geology workflows

  • Support project and contract management functions as required


๐ŸŽ“ Qualifications & Experience

  • Grade 12 / Std 10 / N3 / relevant NQF4 qualification

  • Undergraduate or Graduate degree in Engineering Geology, Mining Engineering, or similar

  • Valid driverโ€™s license (EB)

  • Professional registration: GSSA, SANIRE, SAIMM (advantageous)

  • Chamber of Mines Certificate in Rock Mechanics or partial completion (advantageous)

Experience:

  • 5+ yearsโ€™ geotechnical / caving experience, including 3+ years in a senior or supervisory underground role

  • Knowledge of ground support techniques and underground mining processes

  • Understanding of mine planning, survey, geology, and integration with geotechnical functions

  • Project and contract management skills

Technical Knowledge & Skills:

  • Expertise in underground mining processes and legislation

  • Rock mass characterisation and classification (Q, RMR, GSI, MRMR)

  • Methodical approach with strong analytical skills and attention to detail
