What We Do:

The HSRC Internship Programme is designed to:

  • Increase skilled resources within the National System of Innovation (NSI).
  • Provide graduates and postgraduates with opportunities to gain hands-on work experience that boosts their career prospects.

  • Promote lifelong learning and encourage a sustainable, innovative future.

Eligibility Criteria:

To apply for the internship, applicants must:

  • Be a South African citizen or Permanent Resident (with a valid South African Identity Document).
  • Be 35 years old or younger at the time of appointment.
  • Hold an NQF Level 7-9 qualification from a DHET-accredited higher education institution.
  • Be unemployed at the time of application.

Qualifications accepted:

  • NQF Level 7: Bachelor’s, Advanced Diploma, or B-Tech Degree
  • NQF Level 8: Bachelor’s Honours Degree or Postgraduate Diploma
  • NQF Level 9: Master’s Degree or M-Tech

Ineligible candidates include:

  • Those holding Diplomas below NQF Level 7 or PhD qualifications.
  • Full-time students or those receiving DSI-funded scholarships during the internship year.

Mentorship & Development:

One of the key features of the HSRC Internship Programme is mentorship. Interns are paired with experienced mentors who guide them through skill development in their field of study. This ensures that interns receive comprehensive support as they transition from education to the professional world.

  • Research Management & Support: Gain experience in managing and supporting critical research projects.
  • Capacity Development: Participate in workshops and training designed to enhance transversal skills.

Remuneration & Duration:

  • Interns receive a monthly stipend for the duration of the programme.
  • The internship runs for 24 months, providing long-term career development opportunities.

Step 1: Hosts (research institutions and higher education entities) express interest in hosting interns.
Step 2: Graduates submit their internship applications.
Step 3: Successful hosts access an intern portal to view applications and select candidates.
Step 4: Hosts interview shortlisted candidates and finalize placements.
Step 5: HSRC verifies eligibility, and successful candidates sign contracts to begin their internships.
