Are you passionate about advancing academic literacy in higher education? The University of the Free State (UFS) is seeking a dynamic, innovative, and experienced Lecturer/Researcher to coordinate and enhance its Academic Literacy Programme at the Qwaqwa campus.

This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified academic to engage in both teaching and research, while shaping literacy development strategies across disciplines and contributing to student success.


Key Responsibilities:

Teaching & Learning

  • Deliver academic literacy modules (including online and blended formats).

  • Design assessments and engaging course materials.

  • Provide student support and feedback through various digital and in-person channels.

  • Facilitate extensive reading programmes such as M-Reader and iCAN.

  • Organize and lead writing workshops and consultations.

  • Continuously improve curriculum content and delivery strategy.

  • Monitor facilitator quality and student engagement using data-driven evaluation tools.

Research

  • Conduct context-driven research into academic literacy needs of students.

  • Stay abreast of global trends in academic literacy and related pedagogical strategies.

  • Present research at conferences and publish at least one scholarly output annually.

  • Cultivate a culture of inquiry and reflective practice within the Academic Language and Learning Development (ALLD) environment.

Leadership & Administration

  • Coordinate academic facilitators and oversee class and student group allocations.

  • Manage operational aspects including training materials, performance reviews, and student assessments.

  • Mentor facilitators and ensure quality appointments and ongoing development.

  • Provide strategic support to the ALLD and CTL Qwaqwa heads for continuous programme improvement.

  • Serve as liaison between faculties and the ALLD to align literacy development with faculty needs.

Engaged Scholarship

  • Leverage academic expertise to engage external stakeholders and contribute to community development.

  • Actively participate in relevant professional associations and outreach events.

  • Support holistic student development through scholarly-informed engagement.


Requirements:

Inherent Requirements:

  • PhD in English, Applied Linguistics, Education, or a related discipline (NQF Level 10) – for permanent appointment
    OR

  • Master’s Degree in the above disciplines (NQF Level 9) – 5-year contract with PhD completion required for permanency

  • A solid academic track record.

  • At least 3 years of experience in academic literacy or English language teaching at a higher education institution.

  • Evidence of conference presentations and potential for research publication.

Recommendations:

  • Experience in:

    • Coordinating teaching and learning in Higher Education.

    • Curriculum development and assessment design.

    • Consulting in university writing centres.

    • Learning Management Systems (e.g. Blackboard, Moodle, Sakai).

    • TEFL/TESOL or related certifications.

    • Desktop and field research.

  • Willingness to pursue a PhD (if not yet attained).
