The Road Accident Fund (RAF) is a national public entity established to provide appropriate compensation to all road users within South Africa’s borders. With a clear mission to rehabilitate and compensate those injured due to motor vehicle accidents, the RAF also promotes road safety through legal and financial excellence.

We are currently seeking a qualified and detail-oriented Legal Costs Consultant to join our Claims Division in Johannesburg. If you thrive in a fast-paced legal or insurance environment and are passionate about driving cost efficiencies and fair practices, this opportunity is tailor-made for you.

🔍 Purpose of the Role

The Legal Costs Consultant is responsible for assessing legal cost claims, consulting with legal and medical experts, and ensuring that payments to attorneys are fair, reasonable, and aligned with RAF’s compensation policies.

🧾 Key Responsibilities

Legal Cost Management

Monitor and manage all incoming claims efficiently
Analyze and interpret legal claims and related documentation
Detect and prevent fraudulent or contradictory claims
Assess whether legal representation is required on a case-by-case basis
Determine fair attorney fees based on case merit and effort
Benchmark legal costs and identify areas for potential savings

Quality Assurance

Implement and uphold accurate invoicing processes
Enforce unusual occurrence procedures and policies to mitigate risk

Administrative Support

Handle legal correspondence and documentation
Draft and edit briefs, technical reports, memos, and legal letters
Prepare clear reports and presentations as needed

Reporting

Track performance against objectives and targets
Identify and escalate emerging legal risks
Create and deliver process improvement and cost-efficiency reports

Stakeholder Management

Build and maintain relationships with legal and medical professionals
Communicate effectively with attorneys and internal teams
Ensure stakeholder feedback and queries are addressed within SLAs

🎓 Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma in Law, Accounting, or a related field

🏆 Experience Required

Minimum 3 years’ experience in legal, insurance, or accounting roles
Familiarity with post-claim processes, legal cost structures, and financial reporting
