We are currently looking for a skilled and dedicated Legal Counsel to join our Head Office team based in Woodmead.
This role is a unique opportunity for a seasoned legal professional to provide strategic and operational legal advice within a multinational group, with a focus on commercial law, corporate governance, and dispute resolution in both local and cross-border contexts.
Key Responsibilities
As Legal Counsel at AECI, your duties will include but not be limited to:
🔹 Legal Advisory & Contract Management

Provide expert legal advice on commercial, contractual, and corporate matters across all AECI Mining subsidiaries.

Draft, review, and negotiate complex commercial contracts and legal documentation.

Supervise and evaluate external legal service providers, ensuring a cost-benefit approach.

Advise on risk exposure and mitigation strategies aligned with company objectives.
🔹 Litigation & Dispute Resolution

Manage litigation processes and dispute resolution strategies.

Work closely with business units to handle claims, arbitration, and debt collection matters.

Ensure legal compliance across operational activities in accordance with South African and cross-border laws.
🔹 Research & Regulatory Frameworks

Conduct legal research to analyse domestic and international legal trends.

Monitor developments in legislation affecting the mining, chemical, tax, and labour environments.

Evaluate and implement ethics and governance improvements that enhance business compliance.
🔹 Labour & Compliance Oversight

Perform compliance audits relating to labour legislation across South Africa and international operations.

Ensure alignment with corporate policies and local regulatory requirements.

Promote a culture of accountability and transparency across all business units.
Qualifications and Experience
To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

✅ A LLB degree (Bachelor of Laws).

✅ Admission as an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa.

✅ 5 to 8 years post-qualification experience in corporate legal practice.

✅ Demonstrated expertise in commercial and corporate law.

✅ Solid working knowledge of legislation such as:

Company Law

Labour Law
-
Environmental & Mining Law
-
Competition Law
-
Tax and Procurement Legislation

✅ Familiarity with legal processes, contractual environments, and regulatory frameworks.

✅ Experience working within a multinational or high-compliance industry is advantageous.
