Role Overview:

As Legal Counsel, Privacy (EMEA), you will be part of a dynamic legal team dedicated to enhancing GitLab’s global data privacy and compliance program. You will primarily focus on employee privacy, marketing, and entity compliance within EMEA, while also supporting broader privacy initiatives across global operations.

Key Responsibilities:

• Act as a subject matter expert on privacy and data protection across GitLab’s global operations.

• Support and improve the global privacy program, including documentation, training, compliance monitoring, data privacy impact assessments (DPIAs), and data transfer mechanisms.

• Draft and manage internal policies and external notices to ensure compliance with privacy laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, UK GDPR).

• Review and negotiate privacy provisions in commercial and vendor agreements.

• Respond to privacy-related inquiries from customers, regulators, and internal teams.

• Stay current with evolving global data protection laws and regulations.

Requirements:

• 4+ years of legal experience focused on privacy/data protection, preferably within multinational environments.

• JD/LLB or equivalent legal degree; bar admission required.

• Deep knowledge of GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA, and other privacy frameworks.

• Proven ability to work collaboratively across functions and time zones.

• Practical, risk-based approach to problem-solving.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

• Experience working remotely and across different jurisdictions is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications:

• CIPP/E (Certified Information Privacy Professional – Europe).

• Experience working with European Works Councils (EWCs).

• Familiarity with GitLab’s platform and remote-first culture.
