๐Ÿงพ ROLE OVERVIEW

The Legal Counsel (Retail) will provide business-focused legal advice to Momentum Investmentsโ€™ retail businesses. The role has a strong emphasis on wealth platforms, LISP administration, insurance, and retirement products, requiring deep familiarity with South Africaโ€™s financial services regulatory environment.

This position supports contract drafting, product development, compliance initiatives, and ongoing legal advisory work. It is well suited to a lawyer who enjoys working closely with operational, product, and compliance teams in a fast-paced, regulated environment.


๐ŸŽฏ KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

๐Ÿ“‘ Contractual Support

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of legal agreements, including:

    • Investment management agreements

    • Service level agreements (SLAs)

    • LISP SLAs

    • Client-facing documentation

    • Product terms and conditions

    • Marketing material and data agreements

  • Maintain and continuously improve contract templates

  • Manage contracts throughout the full contract lifecycle


โš–๏ธ Legal Risk Management

  • Monitor regulatory and legislative developments impacting the business

  • Identify, assess, and communicate legal risks in projects, policies, and systems

  • Support internal legal and regulatory training initiatives


๐Ÿ’ผ Legal Advisory & Queries

  • Advise stakeholders on legal, contractual, and product-related matters

  • Provide guidance on interpretation and implementation of legislation

  • Support operational teams with practical legal advice

  • Conduct legal research and deliver commercially sound legal opinions


๐Ÿš€ Product Development & Project Support

  • Provide legal input into new product launches and portfolio developments

  • Support projects driven by regulatory or legislative change

  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams including tax, compliance, IT, and marketing

  • Ensure legal alignment throughout project lifecycles


๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Governance & Compliance

  • Work closely with compliance and risk teams to manage regulatory change

  • Support implementation of internal controls, systems, and policies

  • Track legislative developments and assess business impact

  • Promote a strong culture of governance and regulatory compliance


๐ŸŽ“ QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • LLB Degree

  • Admitted Attorney

  • 3โ€“5 years post-admission legal experience

  • Strong contract drafting experience

  • Solid understanding of South African financial services legislation, including:

    • FAIS

    • FICA

    • CISCA

    • Insurance Act

    • Pension Funds Act

    • POPIA

Advantageous

  • Experience within a LISP, wealth, or investment business

  • CFP designation

  • Exposure to retail and retirement investment products
