π§Ύ JOB OVERVIEW
The Legal Counsel will provide specialist legal advice and perform general legal functions to proactively manage and mitigate legal risk across the business. The role supports internal stakeholders with clear, accurate legal guidance while ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, internal policies, and regulatory frameworks.
This position is ideal for an experienced legal professional with strong exposure to insurance and financial services regulation, who can confidently engage with stakeholders at management level.
π― KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
βοΈ Legal Advisory

Deliver legally sound and practical advice within established legal frameworks

Support the business in reducing legal risk through proactive legal intervention

Handle complex or contentious legal matters with guidance from senior legal colleagues
π Information & Business Support

Interpret and advise on internal policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements

Resolve complex legal queries and enable informed decision-making

Provide clear legal solutions that align with business objectives
π Document Preparation

Draft, review, and vet agreements, legal opinions, policies, and related documents

Ensure all legal documentation is accurate, compliant, and delivered timeously
π€ Stakeholder Engagement

Build and maintain effective relationships across the TIH Group

Engage with stakeholders up to management level to understand legal needs

Liaise with industry bodies regarding complaints and regulatory matters

Participate in project meetings to address legal risks and concerns
π Improvement & Innovation

Identify gaps and inefficiencies in legal processes and systems

Propose and support improvements within change management initiatives
π Personal Capability Development

Act as a subject matter expert within a defined legal area

Maintain professional accreditation and stay current with regulatory changes

Participate in ongoing professional development through training, conferences, and industry research
π QUALIFICATIONS
Education
-
Grade 12 (Essential)
-
LLB or BProc Degree (Essential)
-
Admitted Attorney or Advocate (Essential)
Experience
-
Minimum 5 yearsβ experience in a Legal Counsel role (Essential)

At least 3 yearsβ experience in the insurance industry dealing with regulatory contracts (Essential)

Financial services industry experience (Advantageous)

Strong knowledge of insurance and financial services regulation

Excellent legal drafting and contract review skills
