🌍 About the Role:

An exciting opportunity is available for a Legal Specialist – Mining Regulatory & Permitting to join a reputable global mining organisation in Johannesburg. This role is integral to supporting responsible mining practices by overseeing and advising on mining tenure, land use, permitting, and regulatory compliance in line with South African legislation.

You’ll work in a collaborative environment alongside legal, sustainability, and operational teams to ensure the business meets legal standards, engages effectively with stakeholders, and operates ethically and sustainably.


🛠️ Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert legal guidance on mining rights, tenure, and land access matters under South African law.

  • Oversee mining and environmental permitting processes, including new applications, renewals, and amendments.

  • Address legal concerns related to surface rights, servitudes, and land-use disputes.

  • Ensure full compliance with South African mining, environmental, and social regulations.

  • Develop and implement legal strategies to mitigate permitting risks and support long-term sustainability.

  • Collaborate across functions with legal, sustainability, and operational teams to ensure integrated approaches to compliance.

  • Liaise with regulatory bodies, communities, and government representatives to manage stakeholder relationships.

  • Contribute to policy development, governance frameworks, and legal risk assessments.


✅ Requirements:

  • Admitted Attorney with 3–5 years’ post-qualification experience (PQE).

  • Proven experience in mining, environmental, or regulatory law.

  • Postgraduate qualification in Mining, Environmental, or Regulatory Law (advantageous).

  • Strong understanding of South African mining and environmental legislation.

  • Demonstrated expertise in regulatory compliance, permitting processes, and stakeholder engagement.

  • Excellent legal research, interpretation, negotiation, and drafting skills.

  • Ability to operate independently, manage multiple priorities, and thrive in a high-stakes, dynamic environment.
