Role Overview

The position is open to both Lecturer and Senior Lecturer applicants within any Mathematics discipline, with a particular interest in Algebra, Analytic Combinatorics, Logic, and Number Theory. The role combines teaching, research, postgraduate supervision, curriculum development, and active service within the School and Faculty.

A central component of this role includes contributing to the Wits Academy for Mathematical Pedagogy, Learning and Innovation for First-Year (AMPLIFY)โ€”a pioneering initiative aimed at transforming teaching and learning in large, diverse first-year mathematics groups through innovative methodologies and digital pedagogies.

This is a high-impact academic role suited to individuals passionate about student success, academic innovation, and high-level mathematical research.


Key Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate courses, including large first-year classes, in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics

  • Develop and review course materials and curricula

  • Supervise postgraduate students at Masterโ€™s and/or PhD level (Senior Lecturer)

  • Maintain an active research profile with regular publications

  • Participate in the academic administration of the School, Faculty, and University

  • Engage in service activities relevant to university operations

  • Support the AMPLIFY initiative through:

    • curriculum innovation

    • digital teaching methodologies

    • academic support solutions

    • first-year student success strategies

  • Contribute to the scholarship of teaching and learning


Qualifications & Experience

Minimum Requirements โ€“ Lecturer

  • PhD in Mathematics or equivalent

  • Teaching experience at tertiary level

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching

  • Evidence of active, relevant research

  • Experience in university-level service roles

Minimum Requirements โ€“ Senior Lecturer

  • PhD in Mathematics or equivalent

  • Strong teaching record with evidence of innovative instructional strategies

  • Proven research activity with publications

  • Experience supervising MSc or PhD students

  • Demonstrated university service contributions
