About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer to join our Projects & Engineering team in Richards Bay. This critical role is instrumental in aligning local operations with global engineering excellence, especially in the aluminium sector (carbon and electrolysis). You’ll support the lifecycle of equipment, collaborate with the global Fives Aluminium network (notably the head office in France), and contribute to innovative, sustainable solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Systems & SAP Management

  • Create and manage Bills of Materials (BOMs) in SAP B1 and SAP R3.

  • Develop and update item codes per internal standards.

  • Extract, analyze, and validate technical data using SAP and AS400.

  • Provide BOM data to support procurement, logistics, and project planning.

CAD Design & Drafting

  • Produce and revise 2D/3D mechanical drawings using Autodesk Inventor and SolidWorks.

  • Interpret general arrangements, sketches, and technical specifications.

  • Apply and develop CAD standards compliant with ISO 9001.

  • Optimize drafting efficiency through consistent methodology and standards.

Mechanical Design & Calculations

  • Conduct mechanical load and tolerance calculations.

  • Prepare engineering documentation for certification and compliance.

  • Approve technical drawings for fabrication, ensuring accuracy and adherence to design specifications.

Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Interface with clients to gather requirements and deliver tailored engineering solutions.

  • Liaise with the Fives France Head Office to ensure alignment on technical designs and standards.

  • Coordinate with workshops and suppliers for fabrication oversight and quality assurance.

  • Support the Local Product Expert with new innovations and service improvements.

Health, Safety, Environment & Quality (HSEQ)

  • Comply with Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993).

  • Maintain and improve the HSEQ Management System.

  • Proactively resolve non-conformance issues and document improvements.

Problem Solving & Innovation

  • Address compatibility issues between European and South African components.

  • Troubleshoot CAD-related challenges and optimize material selections.

  • Identify and resolve discrepancies in drawings and BOMs.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement in systems, tools, and processes.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSc or BEng)

  • 3–5 years’ experience in mechanical design/draughting

  • Advanced proficiency in Autodesk Inventor and SolidWorks

  • Experience with Solios and ECL aluminium process equipment is an advantage

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and collaboration skills

  • Knowledge of ISO and engineering compliance frameworks
