The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), managed by the National Research Foundation (NRF), is seeking two Mechanical Engineers to join their team. The successful candidates will contribute to South Africa’s leading role in the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project, enhancing global scientific research through cutting-edge radio astronomy technology.

Key Responsibilities:

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, development, and integration of mechanical systems and subsystems in advanced radio astronomy equipment. Your tasks will include:

Product Development & System Integration:

  • 🛠️ Generate and validate mechanical requirements for subsystems, equipment, and components.
  • 📐 Define concepts at the subsystem/equipment level, ensuring initial interface requirements are clearly defined.
  • 🧪 Perform subsystem/equipment analysis including safety, reliability, and performance evaluations.
  • 🔍 Develop qualification tests (QTP/QTR) and manage test rig configurations for various mechanical systems.
  • 🛠️ Supervise installation and testing activities, ensuring that procedures are followed, and installations are compliant.
  • 🔄 Provide troubleshooting support and approve maintenance manuals for internal and external teams.
  • 📦 Contribute to product configuration management and support various stages of the development cycle.

Team Collaboration & Leadership:

  • 👨‍🏫 Oversee junior engineers and technicians, providing mentorship and ensuring all subassembly and component requirements are met.
  • 🌐 Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in electrical, software, mechanical, and RF engineering to develop integrated systems.

Key Requirements:

Qualification:

  • 🏫 BTech Eng with 6+ years of relevant experience, OR
  • 🏫 BEng/MTech with 4+ years of relevant experience, OR
  • 🏫 M.Eng/MTech with 3+ years of relevant experience, OR
  • 🏫 PhD/D.Eng with 1+ year of relevant experience.

Experience:

  • 📈 Experience in high-technology development and research organizations.
  • 💻 Proven expertise in integrating multiple subsystems, including mechanical, electrical, software, and RF components.
  • 🔧 Knowledge of product development processes, qualification testing, and acceptance testing in a multidisciplinary environment.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • ⚙️ Systems Engineering/Product Development processes.
  • 🔧 Mechanical Component Design: Conceptualize solutions and produce detailed designs for subsystems and components.
  • 💻 3D CAD Modeling: Expertise in creating 3D models and generating detailed manufacturing data packs.
  • 🔍 Structural Analysis: Ability to perform structural analysis for internal loading, interface sizing, and component optimization.
