Job Overview

The Paralegal will play a critical role in strengthening community-based human rights interventions by providing legal and strategic support to Human Rights Ambassadors and Reactors. The role focuses on reviewing, assessing, and guiding responses to documented human rights violations, ensuring that cases are managed appropriately and escalated to THC Legal Officers when necessary.

This position is well suited to an individual passionate about social justice, public health, and community empowerment, with the ability to mentor and support frontline human rights advocates.


Key Responsibilities

β€’ Network and advocate for the human rights of Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) and Young, Key and Vulnerable Populations (YKVPs)
β€’ Conduct quarterly sensitisation workshops with relevant stakeholders
β€’ Support and monitor the documentation and collection of human rights violations
β€’ Review and assess reported cases and provide basic legal guidance on next steps
β€’ Assist community members with drafting affidavits, statements, and formal complaints
β€’ Provide gender-based violence response support
β€’ Supervise and support Human Rights Ambassadors and Reactors
β€’ Facilitate reporting, administration, and case documentation
β€’ Attend meetings, briefings, debriefings, and staff engagements as required


Qualifications

Education

β€’ Matric certificate or equivalent NQF qualification
β€’ Certificate or Diploma in Paralegal Studies, Human Rights, or a related legal or social justice field (advantageous)
β€’ Accredited community paralegal training or recognised short courses in human rights, legal rights awareness, or access to justice (strongly preferred)

Experience

β€’ Minimum of 2 years’ experience in lobbying, advocacy, human rights, or programming within public health or the HIV sector
β€’ Experience in facilitating training sessions and workshops
β€’ Experience in mentoring or supporting community-based staff
β€’ Exposure to harm reduction and key population programming (beneficial)
β€’ Experience engaging stakeholders to reduce stigma and discrimination

Skills and Knowledge

β€’ Foundational knowledge of South African human rights and legal frameworks
β€’ Strong advocacy and stakeholder engagement capability
β€’ MS Office proficiency
β€’ Clear criminal record
β€’ Willingness and ability to travel when required
