The Patent Candidate Attorney role supports the firm’s patent practice by delivering technically robust and legally sound patent services. The position focuses on chemical engineering, process engineering, and chemical technologies, making it ideal for technically qualified candidates transitioning into the legal profession. A strong emphasis is placed on persuasive writing, precision, and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into legally compliant patent documentation.


🎯 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in drafting and filing patent applications in chemical and process engineering fields

  • Conduct patentability searches and analyse technical and scientific literature

  • Support senior attorneys with responses to patent office communications and examiner reports

  • Translate complex engineering concepts into clear, legally sound patent specifications

  • Maintain accurate records of filings, deadlines, and client correspondence

  • Review and revise South African patent applications originating from foreign jurisdictions

  • Participate in client meetings and contribute technical insights to IP strategy discussions

  • Stay up to date with developments in patent law, engineering innovations, and industry trends

Education

  • Four-year BEng qualification (Chemical or Process Engineering) OR

  • Master’s or Doctoral qualification in Chemistry

  • In possession of or currently enrolled in an LLB degree

Experience

  • Suitable for technically qualified graduates transitioning into the legal profession

  • Prior exposure to patents or intellectual property law is advantageous but not mandatory

Skills

  • Exceptional English writing and verbal communication skills

  • Strong ability to interpret and analyse complex technical information
