Truworths, one of South Africa’s leading fashion retailers, is hiring a Payroll Accountant to join our Human Resources division in Cape Town. This is a permanent, on-site position offering a fantastic opportunity to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment where your payroll and finance expertise will make a real impact.

As the Payroll Accountant, you will be responsible for the full payroll function—including general ledger integration, tax compliance, and reconciliation—for operations in South Africa, selected African countries, and the United Kingdom. You’ll play a critical role in ensuring employees are paid correctly and on time, while also contributing to financial accuracy and process enhancement.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage complete payroll processing and general ledger reconciliation across South Africa, African countries, and the UK.

  • Ensure 100% compliance with all legislative and regulatory requirements related to tax, benefits, and payroll deductions.

  • Prepare and maintain accurate payroll records and generate reports for internal stakeholders and statutory bodies.

  • Identify and resolve payroll discrepancies timeously to maintain accurate financial data.

  • Work closely with the Employee Benefits Department to verify accurate employee data and maintain up-to-date payroll files.

  • Participate in and support internal and external audits related to payroll and benefits.

  • Enhance payroll accuracy and processing efficiency by developing and refining systems and procedures.

  • Prepare country-specific dividend statements, assist with budgeting, and support financial forecasting activities.

  • Mentor and lead junior finance staff, promoting a high-performance, compliance-driven culture.


Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

  • Minimum 4 years of relevant experience, including:

    • 3 years in a payroll or accounting role with a strong focus on accounts payable.

    • At least 2 years of team leadership or supervisory experience.

  • In-depth understanding of South African payroll regulations, tax laws, and accounting principles.

  • Strong working knowledge of payroll systems, particularly Oracle or similar platforms.

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other MS Office applications.

  • Proven track record in report generation, payroll reconciliations, and statutory compliance.
