About the Role

The Professional Nurse – Surgical plays a key role in ensuring high-quality surgical nursing care within a collaborative multi-professional environment. This role involves delivering safe, evidence-based care aligned with nursing legislation and Scope of Practice guidelines.

The Professional Nurse leads care delivery, coordinates nursing activities, supports risk management, promotes a positive patient experience, and contributes to building staff competence within the surgical unit. This position is ideal for a passionate, detail-oriented clinician who thrives in a structured and fast-paced hospital environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver comprehensive and safe surgical nursing care aligned with clinical standards and protocols.

  • Collaborate with multi-professional teams to ensure optimal and coordinated patient care.

  • Identify, mitigate, and manage risks to uphold patient safety and clinical compliance.

  • Maintain accurate, complete documentation of all nursing interventions and patient activities.

  • Support a positive client experience by fostering a calm, supportive environment.

  • Promote learning and competence development within the team through guidance and mentorship.

  • Ensure accurate charting and management of equipment, consumables, and stock utilised in the unit.


Qualifications & Requirements

Education

Essential:

  • Diploma leading to registration as a General Nurse, OR

  • 4-year Nursing Diploma / Bachelor of Nursing

Desired:

  • Postgraduate Advanced Diploma in Midwifery

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing (e.g. Critical Care, Emergency Care, Peri-operative Nursing) for specialist unit placement

Experience

Essential:

  • None

Desired:

  • Exposure to a surgical or hospital environment (advantageous)

Skills & Knowledge

  • Basic Life Support (BLS). ACLS, ATLS, PALS required for specialised wards

  • Patient assessment skills and care-plan development

  • Infection prevention and control principles

  • Strong understanding of pharmacology

  • Nursing processes, clinical procedures, and scientific nursing principles

  • Nursing record keeping and documentation accuracy

  • Familiarity with relevant nursing legislation and regulations

  • Risk identification and escalation

  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Office)
