Job Overview

The Proposal Engineer will be responsible for preparing project cost estimates and detailed technical proposals for electrical and automation engineering projects.

The role involves analyzing Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and Requests for Quotations (RFQs), reviewing technical documentation, coordinating with suppliers and subcontractors, and developing competitive solutions that meet client requirements.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with sales, engineering, and project teams to ensure proposals are accurate, technically sound, and aligned with project specifications.

Key Responsibilities

Proposal & Tender Preparation

Prepare detailed project cost estimates and technical proposals.
Analyze RFPs and RFQs to determine project requirements and scope.

Technical Analysis

Review technical specifications, drawings, and documentation.
Develop engineering solutions aligned with client needs and project standards.

Supplier & Contractor Coordination

Communicate with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain technical information and pricing.
Compile proposal documentation for submission.

Engineering Support

Interpret electrical and automation system requirements.
Provide input on engineering design considerations and cost optimization.

Collaboration

Work with sales, engineering, and project teams during proposal preparation.
Ensure proposals meet technical and commercial requirements.

Qualifications

Education

Matric (Grade 12)
National Diploma (ND) in Electrical Engineering
B-Tech in Electrical Engineering (Advantageous)

Professional Membership (Preferred)

Membership with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
Project Management or relevant professional accreditation.

Experience

3–5 years experience in estimating and pricing bids in an electrical engineering environment.
Experience working on industrial electrical projects and tenders.
Experience with Motor Control Centres (MCC) and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems.
Experience analyzing RFPs and RFQs.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and engineering specifications.
Experience in the water and wastewater treatment industry (Advantageous).

Required Skills

Knowledge of tender and contractual processes.
Cost estimation and pricing techniques.
Intermediate Microsoft Excel skills for calculations and financial analysis.
Basic understanding of Variable Speed Drives, PLC, SCADA, and MCC systems.
Knowledge of engineering design methods and technical documentation.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
