💼 Job Summary

Rand Water invites highly capable, ethical, and visionary leaders to apply or be nominated for 12 Non-Executive Board Member positions. These individuals will play a pivotal role in shaping the organisation’s strategic direction, strengthening governance, and ensuring that South Africa’s leading bulk water provider fulfils its mandate sustainably and effectively.

The Minister of Water and Sanitation will appoint the final candidates.


🎯 Purpose of the Role

The Board Members will provide independent oversight, strategic direction, and governance leadership while supporting Rand Water’s Executive Management in delivering reliable, high-quality bulk water services.


🛠 Key Responsibilities

Strategic & Corporate Governance

  • Provide oversight on Rand Water’s strategy, policies, and long-term business model.

  • Uphold principles of ethical leadership, accountability, and transparency.

  • Shape high-level decisions informed by PFMA, Water Services Act, and King IV.

Risk, Audit & Compliance Oversight

  • Monitor strategic risks and review mitigation strategies.

  • Ensure compliance with statutory reporting and legal frameworks.

  • Oversee governance standards within a State-Owned Entity environment.

Technical, Financial & Sector Expertise

  • Contribute specialised knowledge in engineering, finance, governance, technology, environmental management, or water sector operations.

  • Support financial sustainability and responsible resource stewardship.

Board Participation & Engagement

  • Attend scheduled Board and Committee meetings.

  • Participate actively and constructively in strategic discussions.

  • Review organisational performance and statutory compliance reports.


🎓 Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • 🎓 Minimum: NQF Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree

  • 🎓 Advantageous: NQF Level 9 postgraduate qualification

Experience

  • 5+ years as a Non-Executive Director in a governance-driven entity

  • 5+ years serving on Board Committees

  • 5–10 years Executive or Senior Management-level experience

  • ⭐ Proven exposure to Boardroom dynamics and governance frameworks

  • ⭐ Experience in at least one of the following areas:

    • Engineering, water management, environmental science

    • Corporate governance, commercial law, compliance & risk

    • Finance, treasury, auditing, ICT governance, digital transformation

    • Supply chain management

    • Infrastructure & capital project management

    • Pension Funds / Medical Schemes governance (advantageous)

Knowledge Areas

  • 📘 PFMA, Water Services Act, Companies Act, King IV

  • 📘 Governance and regulatory oversight for SOEs

  • 📘 Scientific/engineering disciplines relevant to water utilities

  • 📘 Financial governance, auditing, and technology innovation

🚫 Grounds for Disqualification

You may NOT be appointed if you:

  • Are an unrehabilitated insolvent

  • Have been convicted of fraud, dishonesty, or served prison time without fine option

  • Are legally disqualified from holding a director position


💳 Remuneration

Board Members will be remunerated at rates approved by the Minister of Water and Sanitation, including compensation for authorised duties and meetings.
