JOB OVERVIEW
The Senior Groundwater Numerical Modeller will play a critical technical leadership role within the consultancy’s Johannesburg-based team. The position focuses on the design, development, calibration, and interpretation of advanced numerical groundwater models to support mining projects, environmental assessments, and regulatory compliance.
This role is suited to a highly experienced hydrogeologist who thrives on complex technical challenges, multidisciplinary collaboration, and mentoring junior professionals while contributing strategic insight to water-related projects.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
💧 Groundwater Modelling & Analysis

Develop conceptual models and numerical groundwater simulations using tools such as MODFLOW, MT3D, and FeFLOW.

Model groundwater flow and contaminant transport to support mining and environmental decision-making.
📊 Hydrogeological Investigations
-
Conduct groundwater impact assessments, water supply studies, and contamination investigations.

Collect, analyse, and interpret hydrogeological data including geophysics, hydraulic testing, and hydrogeochemistry.

Support well design and evaluate aquifer performance through pumping and hydraulic tests.
🧩 Project Leadership & Integration

Lead or contribute to project planning, budgeting, reporting, and client engagement.

Integrate groundwater modelling outputs into Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs).

Support regulatory submissions, including water use licensing applications.
👥 Technical Leadership & Collaboration

Provide mentorship, training, and technical guidance to junior team members.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary specialists across environmental, mining, and engineering teams.

Contribute strategic input to complex, high-value projects across multiple geographies.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Education
-
BSc (Hons) in Hydrogeology or a related discipline with Geology as a major.

Additional qualifications in Chemistry or Mathematics (Advantageous).
Professional Experience
-
Minimum of 10 years’ experience in numerical groundwater modelling.

Proven expertise in groundwater flow and contaminant transport modelling.

Experience supporting mining-related studies and environmental assessments.
Technical Skills
-
Strong experience with MODFLOW, MT3D, FeFLOW, or similar modelling platforms.

Solid understanding of hydrogeochemistry, well design, and hydraulic test interpretation.

Registered with a relevant professional body.

Valid driver’s licence with willingness to travel across Africa and internationally.
