The Central Human Resources Office supports multiple academic and administrative departments across the University. The team drives HR strategy, compliance, policy development, and people-focused initiatives that foster a professional, inclusive, and well-supported working environment.
The Senior Human Resources Officer plays a key role in translating HR strategy into practical, impactful processes β ensuring effective recruitment, labour relations, policy implementation, and organisational support.
π― Role Overview
This senior position requires a strong HR generalist who can manage recruitment end-to-end, guide departments on HR policies, oversee employee relations, maintain high-quality HR data, and provide strategic support aligned with University objectives.
You will work closely with line managers, Payroll, HR Development, and departmental administrators to ensure all HR practices meet legal and policy requirements.
π οΈ Key Responsibilities
π¦ Recruitment & Onboarding

Handle full-cycle recruitment for all staff categories.

Administer onboarding processes and ensure correct completion of benefits documentation.

Implement Employment Equity (EE) targets and advise managers on compliance.
π€ HR Advisory & Support to Departments

Understand operational needs and provide HR guidance to line managers.

Advise on University policies, procedures, and labour legislation.

Provide support for employee relations, including grievance and disciplinary processes.
π HR Administration

Maintain accurate HR data, including HEMIS, Master Data, and tax year-end records.

Liaise with Payroll on leave payouts, allowances, and special payments.

Prepare HR reports, documentation, and compliance records.
π Policy, Change & Training

Assist with policy development and ensure compliance across departments.

Facilitate workshops when policy changes occur.

Coordinate departmental induction in collaboration with HR Development.
π Strategic HR Contribution

Support HR-related projects and organisational initiatives.

Promote customer-centric HR services across all departments.
π Minimum Requirements
π Qualifications
-
Degree in Human Resources, Industrial Psychology, or Social Sciences.
πΌ Experience
-
5 years HR generalist experience.
-
Minimum 2 years at senior level (higher education experience preferred).

Essential experience using the Oracle HR Information System.
π§ Skills & Knowledge
-
Knowledge of LRA, BCEA, Employment Equity Act, and relevant legislation.

Excellent communication and report-writing skills.
-
High level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Ability to manage confidential information.

Project management skills (advantageous).
