JOB OVERVIEW
The Senior Survey Officer is responsible for coordinating and executing all mine surveying activities within a defined section or work area in line with the approved mining plan. This role plays a critical part in supporting safe, efficient underground mining operations through accurate surveying, planning, modelling, and data management.
The position requires strong technical expertise, leadership capability, and close collaboration with surveying, planning, geology, geotechnical, and production teams.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
๐งญ Survey Coordination & Planning

Coordinate and manage the survey programme in line with mine standards and objectives.

Plan excavations and conduct associated surveying using 3D modelling software.

Design mine layouts using CAD to optimise safety, production, and reserve extraction.
๐ Data Management & Reporting

Prepare and sign off month-end production sheets.

Monitor ore extraction, movement figures, and production statistics against budget.

Compile weekly and monthly production reports and digital terrain models.

Manage survey databases and ensure data integrity through manual and system checks.
๐ฐ Survey Execution

Perform advanced Total Station, GPS, surface, underground, and borehole surveys.

Conduct capital and primary development surveys including shaft sinking and development.

Perform tachometric surveys, level profiling, and geological structural mapping.
๐งฉ Technical & Digital Integration

Investigate and implement new surveying technologies to improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Coordinate terrestrial and digital photography for electronic plan compilation.

Compile survey layouts in accordance with codes of practice.
๐ฅ Leadership & Collaboration

Mentor and develop subordinates in line with training criteria.

Assign work and manage service providers against agreed service level agreements.

Build strong working relationships across geology, geotechnical, ventilation, production, and planning teams.
๐ก Safety, Environment & Compliance

Ensure adherence to mine safety, security, and environmental management programmes.

Ensure compliance with statutory legislation and company standards.

Prepare reports and statutory returns for the Inspectorate.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
-
Grade 12 Certificate or equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification.

National Diploma in Mine, Land, or Engineering Surveying or Advanced Chamber of Mines (Survey and Valuation) Certificate.

BTech Degree in Mineral Resource Management or related field (Advantageous).
Experience
-
Minimum of 3 yearsโ underground mine surveying experience.

Proven experience in capital, development, and production surveying.

Strong understanding of mining legislation and compliance requirements.
Skills
-
Proficiency in MicroStation and CAD software.
-
Experience with Cyclone, Leica, Maptek, Trimble, Modelmaker, GeoSLAM, and related surveying technologies.

Strong computer literacy, including MS Office Suite.

Valid EB / Code 8 Driverโs Licence.
