Role Purpose
The Senior Decision Scientist plays a critical role in solving complex business problems and shaping strategic decisions through advanced analytics, data science, and quantitative modelling.
This role focuses on transforming large volumes of business data into actionable insights that drive improved decision-making, new product development, operational efficiency, and revenue growth. You will contribute directly to Capitec’s AI and advanced analytics strategy by designing, deploying, and monitoring predictive and decision models across key business domains.
Key Responsibilities

Solve business problems using data science, quantitative analysis, and traditional scoring techniques

Translate business questions into structured analytical and decision-making frameworks

Design, build, and deploy advanced analytics and machine learning models

Develop predictive, classification, and scoring models to support strategic and operational decisions
-
Contribute to Capitec’s AI strategy and enable data-led decision-making across the bank
-
Analyse and optimise data for specific functional business areas
-
Identify opportunities for increased revenue, reduced costs, and process improvement
-
Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements and align analytics with business needs
-
Ensure best practices in model governance, reusability, monitoring, and reproducibility
-
Support continuous improvement of decision science methodologies and frameworks
Qualifications
Minimum
-
Honours Degree in Mathematics or Statistics
Preferred
-
Master’s Degree in Mathematics or Statistics
Experience and Knowledge
Minimum
-
Experience length dependent on qualifications obtained
-
Strong knowledge of statistical modelling and predictive analytics
-
Experience with traditional scoring techniques, including logistic regression, binning, and missing value handling
-
Practical experience with machine learning techniques such as neural networks, SVMs, and random forests
-
Proficiency in at least one machine learning language (e.g. Python or SAS Viya)

Business analysis and requirements gathering experience

Understanding of financial services business environments, including risk and compliance
-
Knowledge of regulatory frameworks such as NCR, POPIA, and SARB requirements
-
Experience working in cloud environments (Azure, AWS) and large relational databases
-
Functional business area exposure (e.g. Credit or Risk)
-
Experience developing scorecards from scratch

Strong understanding of machine learning theory and practical application
-
Knowledge of decision science best practices, including model monitoring and lifecycle management
Advantageous

Over 5 years’ experience in an analytical or decision science role

Experience delivering predictive models into production environments

Financial services or banking sector experience

Credit industry and credit cycle exposure

Familiarity with the bank decision science lifecycle
