Exxaro is seeking a highly skilled Senior Electrical Engineer to join the Grootegeluk Coal Business Unit in Lephalale. This is a strategic and technical leadership role focused on delivering engineering excellence, driving technology improvement, and supporting major operational and project objectives.

The successful candidate will provide expert-level electrical engineering support, champion compliance and safety, enhance technology capabilities, protect intellectual property, and guide multidisciplinary project teams. This role is ideal for a professional with deep technical expertise, strong project leadership, and a commitment to innovation, safety, and operational excellence.

Role Purpose

To deliver specialist electrical engineering leadership that supports Exxaro’s strategic objectives, ensures safe and reliable operations, and enhances the organisation’s engineering capabilities. The Senior Engineer will oversee design integrity, project execution, budget management, compliance with engineering standards, and continuous improvement initiatives across the business unit.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Leadership & Technical Support

• Provide expert electrical engineering guidance across business units and major projects.

• Lead the development and execution of fit-for-purpose engineering designs aligned with Exxaro standards and legal requirements.

• Solve complex technical issues and ensure high availability of critical electrical systems.

Project Engineering & Budget Management

• Oversee project engineering deliverables, ensuring cost control, schedule adherence, and quality compliance.

• Manage project budgets and cost recovery processes efficiently.

• Monitor contractor performance and enforce engineering governance.

Compliance, Safety & Risk Control

• Ensure adherence to Safety, Health, Environment and Community (SHEC) standards.

• Conduct hazard identification and risk assessments for electrical activities.

• Embed safety culture through engineering discipline leadership and coaching.

Innovation, Technology & Intellectual Property

• Evaluate new technologies and integrate relevant solutions into operations.

• Safeguard Exxaro intellectual property and ensure knowledge retention.

• Build strong networks with industry bodies, academic institutions, and professional forums.

Standards, Quality & Continuous Improvement

• Standardise engineering processes and promote sharing of best practices.

• Enhance functional excellence through simplification of procedures and effective governance.

• Champion continuous learning, technical upskilling, and professional development.

Stakeholder & Team Collaboration

• Provide technical direction to multidisciplinary teams.

Minimum Requirements

• BEng Electrical Engineering (Essential)

• PrEng with Engineering Council of South Africa (Essential)

• 6–8 years electrical engineering experience in maintenance, risk, procurement, project engineering, contract management, and hazard assessment

• Proven ability to manage complex technical projects and budgets

• Understanding of IP protection and engineering networking

• Psychometric assessment (conducted by Exxaro)

• Certificate of Fitness (conducted by Exxaro)
