Role Overview

The Energy System Studies Engineer – Senior Associate will play a critical role in supporting the growth of Tetra Tech’s South Africa–based energy practice. The role focuses on leading and independently executing complex power system studies related to grid integration, system stability, and energy transition projects.

The position reports to the Senior Director in South Africa and requires a strong combination of technical expertise, client engagement capability, and business development support. This role is fully remote, with international travel required as part of project execution.


Key Responsibilities

Technical Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute advanced power system studies including load flow, short circuit, dynamic and transient stability, harmonics, protection coordination, arc flash, and electromagnetic transient studies

  • Independently develop and execute power system models using tools such as PSS®E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, ETAP, PSCAD, EMTDC, and related platforms

  • Perform governor, AVR, and user-defined control modeling

  • Model battery energy storage systems, wind, and solar PV plants including master controllers

  • Execute SVC, STATCOM, synchronous condenser, and inverter-based resource modeling, including grid-forming inverters

  • Lead HVDC interconnector modeling for feasibility studies and performance specification development

  • Automate power system simulations using scripting languages such as Python

  • Analyse, interpret, and validate simulation, test, and field measurement data


Project Management Responsibilities

  • Lead the preparation of high-quality technical reports and client presentations

  • Coordinate with internal technical experts across Tetra Tech business units

  • Engage directly with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors

  • Prepare and review technical inputs for tenders and proposals

  • Manage or support small to medium-sized projects to meet financial and delivery targets

  • Review and appraise work completed by Analysts, Associates, and junior engineers

  • Facilitate knowledge sharing and cross-training within the team


Business Development Responsibilities

  • Lead and support proposal preparation in collaboration with business development teams

  • Draft expressions of interest and contribute technical content to bids

  • Participate in conferences, industry events, and networking initiatives

  • Support marketing efforts through technical content sharing and thought leadership


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (BSc or BEng)

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in energy system planning, studies, and modelling

  • Strong knowledge of Python or similar scripting languages

  • Advanced IT literacy and numerical analysis capability

  • Strong grounding in first-principles engineering and academic research methods

  • Proficiency in written and spoken English

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams


Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification such as MSc, MEng, or PhD

  • Prior experience in a technical role within the energy sector

  • Experience in budget preparation and financial management

  • Proficiency in written and spoken French

Work Environment & Travel

  • Standard working hours: Monday to Friday, core business hours (08:30 – 17:30 local time)

  • Flexible working arrangements with required overlap for team collaboration

  • Fully remote role

  • International travel of approximately 20% to utilities, substations, control centres, project sites, and power plants
