About the Role
Shopify is looking for a Software Engineer (ClickHouse) to join our Engineering & Data team. As a Staff Infrastructure Engineer, you’ll be a key technical leader, helping shape our highly scalable, distributed cloud software that supports millions of merchants worldwide. Your work will directly impact Shopify’s platform reliability, performance, and scalability.
Key Responsibilities ✅
✔️ Design and build scalable, resilient ClickHouse infrastructure ✔️ Optimize data pipelines, queries, and migrations for performance and efficiency ✔️ Develop and maintain high-performance distributed systems ✔️ Lead and mentor engineers while maintaining technical excellence ✔️ Ensure zero-downtime schema migrations with complex DDL operations ✔️ Collaborate with internal teams to provide ClickHouse expertise ✔️ Participate in on-call rotations and contribute to site reliability efforts ✔️ Work with Kubernetes, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and DevOps tools
Qualifications & Skills 🎓
✔️ Expertise in ClickHouse infrastructure, JDBC driver, and query optimization ✔️ Proven experience in building and scaling high-throughput distributed systems ✔️ Strong programming skills in Go, Ruby, Java, or similar ✔️ Experience with DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), and cloud automation ✔️ Familiarity with Kubernetes, GCP, and service discovery tools ✔️ Ability to mentor engineers and lead technical projects ✔️ Remote team experience and excellent collaboration skills ✔️ Passion for innovation and a growth mindset
