Position Overview:

AECOM is seeking a highly skilled Technical Director – Water Resources to lead and manage key projects in water resource planning, infrastructure, and climate change assessments. As a leader in our Water Group, you will provide strategic direction for water resource infrastructure, mentor a talented team of engineers and scientists, and deliver innovative solutions to complex water-related challenges across Africa and globally.

In this role, you will be involved in a wide variety of water-related projects, from planning and forecasting to project execution, ensuring the efficient use of resources and promoting sustainable water management practices.


Key Responsibilities:

Lead & Build Teams:

  • Develop, lead, and mentor a team of engineers and scientists focused on water resources.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to junior team members, fostering growth and development.

Technical Leadership:

  • Oversee water resources studies, including hydropower potential assessments, water supply, and demand forecasting.
  • Conduct feasibility studies for water resource infrastructure development and collaborate with clients on project specifications.
  • Drive technical innovations and solutions to address global water challenges, including climate change adaptation and water security.

Client Relationship Management:

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, stakeholders, and international agencies.
  • Work closely with clients to identify project needs, manage expectations, and deliver high-quality results.

Project Management:

  • Manage multiple water resource projects from inception to completion, ensuring they meet budget, schedule, and technical specifications.
  • Prepare and review proposals, bids, and technical documents for new and ongoing projects.

Collaboration & Reporting:

  • Collaborate with internal teams, clients, and external partners to deliver innovative solutions.
  • Prepare detailed reports and technical documents outlining project progress, challenges, and results.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

Education:

  • BSc Engineering or BSc Hydrology minimum; MScEng or MEng preferred.
  • PrEng (Professional Engineer) registration is essential.

Experience:

  • At least 15 years of professional experience in water resources, with 10 years focused on hydrology and 5 years in hydraulics.
  • Minimum 5 years of project management experience in water resources studies or infrastructure planning/design.
  • Expertise in water resources modeling software (e.g., WRYM, ACRU, WEAP) is advantageous.
  • Experience in irrigation planning, hydropower design, and working with international funding agencies (e.g., World Bank, USAID, AFDB) is highly desirable.

Skills:

  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills, with the ability to guide and inspire a diverse team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lead complex water resources projects, including forecasting, infrastructure design, and climate change strategies.
  • Proficient in water resources planning and design software.
