At The Haven Night Shelter, we are committed to helping adult individuals living on the streets reintegrate into society. Our mission is to provide comprehensive social work services, rehabilitation, family reunification, and support to those in need. With a focus on improving lives, we assist our clients through social work interventions and work closely with partner NGOs funded by the Department of Social Development’s Families Program.

We are currently seeking a Dynamic Social Work Supervisor to join our team and provide critical supervision and leadership to our Social Workers, Social Auxiliary Workers, and Volunteers at our Napier Street, Greenpoint Shelter.


The Role: Temporary Social Work Supervisor

As a Social Work Supervisor, you will play a vital role in enhancing the social work services provided by The Haven Night Shelter and its partner NGOs. You will supervise and support a diverse team of social workers and volunteers, ensuring high-quality social services are delivered to those in need. This position reports directly to the CEO and will involve overseeing staff performance, providing professional guidance, and ensuring compliance with organizational goals.


Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and Advise Social Workers: Provide leadership and guidance to social work staff, ensuring effective service delivery.
  • Quality Control: Review and evaluate the work of supervisees to ensure high-quality social services.
  • Support and Mentorship: Offer mentoring and coaching to team members to enhance professional growth and development.
  • Manage Performance: Address performance issues, conduct disciplinary actions, and manage the overall conduct of the team.
  • Promote Wellbeing: Provide debriefing and support to social workers to manage occupational stress and improve service delivery.
  • Training and Development: Ensure continuous professional development activities for all social work staff.
  • Report Compliance: Ensure that all reporting requirements outlined in Transfer Payment Agreements and contracts are met efficiently and accurately.
  • Ensure Best Practices: Advocate for and promote best practices in social reintegration and family strengthening.

Minimum Requirements

  • Qualifications:
    • Qualified Social Worker registered with SACSSP (South African Council for Social Service Professions).
    • Seven years’ experience in social work practice.
    • A Code 08 driver’s license (non-negotiable).
  • Skills:
    • Proficient in MS Outlook, MS Word, and MS Excel.
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
    • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience:
    • NGO sector experience will be advantageous.
    • Supervision experience or relevant training is beneficial.
