Role Overview:

As a Water Resource Coordinator, you will play a key role in ensuring that water resources at the Mogalakwena Complex are managed effectively and sustainably. This involves overseeing the daily management of the Water Management Plan and the Water Use License, ensuring compliance with water legislation, and coordinating water sampling and reporting.

Working closely with the Senior Engineer Water Resources and Environmental Coordinator, you will support the implementation of site-specific water management strategies and ensure that water-related operations comply with relevant environmental regulations.


Key Responsibilities:

Data Collection & Management:

  • Collect and manage water data from various sources (with the support of the Environmental/Water Assistant).
  • Maintain and update water databases, water balance models, and operational water dashboards.
  • Evaluate water quality and quantity data for accuracy and authenticity, taking corrective actions when necessary.

Reporting & Compliance:

  • Assist in compiling and submitting quarterly reports to the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS).
  • Support Water Use License compliance monitoring and ensure that all reporting meets regulatory standards.
  • Coordinate water quality sampling campaigns for EMPR and DWS Section 21 permits.

Water Quality & Environmental Monitoring:

  • Conduct inspections of dams, silt traps, oil/grease traps, and other water management systems on site.
  • Monitor pollution control measures for surface and groundwater, tailings dams, and return water dams.
  • Investigate water-related incidents, such as spillages and contamination, and report findings to the Environmental Coordinator and Senior Engineer Water Resources.

Flow Metering & Instrumentation Audits:

  • Conduct audits of flow metering systems and ensure continuous improvement of instrumentation practices.
  • Verify that all flow meters and densitometers are calibrated and maintain accurate records for auditing purposes.

Project Support & Tendering:

  • Assist with drafting scopes of work for consultants and support the supply chain and tendering process.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements:

Degree:

  • A relevant qualification in Water Science, Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Water Resources, or Civil Engineering.

Experience:

  • At least 3 years of experience in the water or civil engineering field.
  • Exposure to risk identification and analysis, along with experience in environmental and water quality monitoring.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with scientific methods and processes.
  • Knowledge of water chemistry, water quality sampling, and investigations.

Legislative Knowledge:

  • A good understanding of relevant legislation, including the Minerals and Mining Health and Safety Act (MHSA), National Water Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and the requirements of Regulation GN704.

Other Requirements:

  • A valid Code EB (Code 8) driver’s license is required.

Advantageous Skills:

Water Management Scheme:

  • Experience in Water Management Schemes would be advantageous.

Hydrogeological Knowledge:

  • Understanding of surface water-groundwater interactions and catchment management processes.
