This learnership, based in Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa, is an exceptional gateway into the pharmaceutical sector for individuals passionate about health care, medicine, and customer service. Through this structured programme, you will be fully trained to qualify as a Basic Pharmacist Assistant.


What’s the Purpose of This Learnership?

The primary goal of this programme is to provide learners with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed to thrive in a pharmacy setting. This includes:

  • Completing the learner basic pharmacist assistant course

  • Building a strong foundation in pharmaceutical principles, dispensing processes, and pharmacy operations

  • Preparing for registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a learner basic assistant

Upon successful completion and qualification, learners will be considered for permanent employment within Dis-Chem Pharmacies.


Key Responsibilities:

As part of the programme, you will be expected to:

  • Assist with the sale of Schedule 1 medicines and scheduled substances

  • Help in the compounding, preparation, and manipulation of non-sterile medicines

  • Manage stock unpacking, merchandising, and cleaning of dispensary and over-the-counter (OTC) shelves

  • Learn to accurately interpret scripts and act within SAPC regulations

  • Support accurate picking, packing, labelling, and medication checking

  • Assist in stock control, ensuring correct handling and monitoring of Schedule 1–5 medicines

  • Follow up with patients regarding prescription tracking and appointments

  • Provide customer service through call center scripts and patient telephone support

  • Report stock issues and assist with scheme authorizations for chronic, HIV/AIDS, and oncology medications


Minimum Requirements:

To qualify for this learnership, candidates must:

  • Have completed Grade 12 with:

    • Pure Mathematics

    • (Physical Science or Life Science)

  • Have achieved at least a 50% average


Essential Skills and Competencies:

  • Proficiency in English and a second language (read, write, and speak)

  • Strong time management and ability to work under pressure

  • Attention to detail and numerical accuracy

  • Excellent communication skills and customer focus

  • Teamwork, accountability, and professional conduct

  • Basic computer literacy
