Job Overview

The Electrical & Instrumentation Superintendent will lead all electrical engineering and maintenance activities across mining surface operations. This role ensures statutory compliance, maximises equipment reliability, and supports production efficiency through strong technical leadership.

You will oversee critical electrical infrastructure supporting plant operations such as crushing, milling, and processing systems, while driving continuous improvement and ensuring safe work practices.


Key Responsibilities

Statutory & Legal Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with MHSA, OHS Act, and SANS electrical standards
  • Maintain statutory inspections, testing records, and certifications
  • Fulfil legal responsibilities for electrical engineering governance

Electrical Maintenance Management

  • Oversee maintenance of substations, transformers, switchgear, MCCs, and VSDs
  • Ensure optimal performance of plant electrical systems and utilities
  • Align maintenance practices with OEM and engineering standards

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead electrical teams including foremen, technicians, and contractors
  • Conduct performance management, training, and succession planning
  • Promote a strong safety culture and accountability

Asset & Reliability Management

  • Implement predictive and preventative maintenance strategies
  • Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) and improve system reliability
  • Drive KPIs such as uptime, MTBF, and MTTR

Engineering & Technical Support

  • Support plant upgrades, expansions, and engineering projects
  • Approve electrical designs, schematics, and protection settings
  • Provide expertise in power systems and motor control

Projects & Capital Work

  • Manage electrical scope of capital projects and commissioning activities
  • Participate in FAT/SAT processes and project handovers

Safety & Risk Management

  • Enforce electrical safety standards (LOTO, isolation procedures)
  • Conduct HIRA assessments and incident investigations
  • Ensure compliance with hazardous area requirements

Planning & Budget Control

  • Manage maintenance budgets and track expenditure
  • Optimise maintenance schedules and reduce backlog
  • Oversee procurement of electrical equipment and spares

Reporting & Governance

  • Compile maintenance, reliability, and KPI reports
  • Maintain CMMS data and engineering documentation
  • Monitor energy efficiency and usage trends

Qualifications

Education

  • Degree or Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current)

Experience

  • 7โ€“10 yearsโ€™ experience in electrical maintenance within mining/heavy industry
  • 3โ€“5 yearsโ€™ experience in a supervisory or superintendent role
  • Strong knowledge of MHSA and SANS electrical standards

Skills

  • Expertise in MV/LV systems, substations, and electrical distribution
  • Knowledge of protection systems, relays, and SCADA/PLC interfaces
  • Strong leadership and decision-making capabilities
  • Excellent planning, project management, and organisational skills
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement abilities

Advantageous

  • ECSA registration or candidacy
  • Experience in base metals processing
  • Advanced protection systems training (ABB, Siemens, Schneider)
  • CMMS systems experience (SAP, Pragma, OnKey)
