Position Purpose
Lead a team in providing protection of life, property and environment by efficient and effective management of Fire and Emergency Related Operations. Ensure emergency preparedness and perform administrative duties.
Position Outputs
Maintain operational readiness respond to incidents
Physical deployment of staff to work sites.
Issue and retrieve fire equipment/materials to staff when and where necessary.
Proactively and reactively attend to fire and hazmat emergencies with a view to save life, assets, and environment.
General and personnel administration such as time documents, leave, sick, absence, compilation of maintenance records of fire equipment and materials, compilation of fire incidents and hazards, ordering stocks, data capturing orders and stocks, stock takes and audits, goods receipting, asset register, vehicle mileage/petrol consumption and service records of vehicles.
Inspection duties (fire equipment, foam injection system, hot work being done, tanker berths and vessels, zonal bund valves - Island View, new installations, Grain Elevator and inspections with other departments with regard to the R.M.D. 9 to conform to the act of industrial machinery.
Co-ordinate planned tasks to be executed at the assigned geographic area and regulate the storage, handling and distribution of Dangerous Goods (Hazardous Materials) to comply with legislation and provide reports
Fire prevention inspections of industrial, yards, structures and other buildings or sites to identify possible contraventions of fire safety regulations
Conduct fire and incident investigations to determine the probable cause of the incident.
The deployment and co-ordination of fire personnel to ensure optimal personnel utilisation, on and off the ground through the deployment of resources and equipment in order to minimise damage and losses of life, Transnet Asset/business and environment.
Continuous supervision and control over subordinates on daily activities.
Upkeep and supervision of the fire suppression and protections systems where installed, e.g. Fire monitors in Island View.
Investigation and activation of the emergency alarms and fire suppression and protections systems in the Petro chemical Berths.
Represent the terminal between ship/shore liaisons during pumping operations.
Conduct risk assessments and authorise the work to be carried out by private contractors on the berth as well as diving operations.
Tug training as well as the training of the marine staff for their firefighting capabilities and take over firefighting operations in an emergency.
Daily and monthly green area meetings.
Carryout Co2 and smoke fixed installation tests and servicing, repairs with contractors.
Perform any other duties as directed by a person having authority.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicant(s) shall meet at least one of following Two (2) Sections requirements.
Hazmat response technician (SAQA/IFSAC) Accreditation. Higher Certificate in Fire Technology (NQF 5) with Four (4) Years minimum experience in the Fire Services as a fire fighter recognised in Fire Services. Be in possession of a valid driver's license minimum C1 with valid PrDP and be in a position to drive such a vehicle. (OD Specific) Only Internal Applicants will be recognised with at least one of the following qualifications: Hazmat Response Technician (IFSAC - International Fire Service Accreditation Congress) Accredited Be in possession of a valid driver's license minimum C1 with valid PrDP and be in a position to drive such a vehicle. (OD Specific) With at least one of the following: Higher Certificate in Fire Technology (SAESI) with Four (4) Years minimum experience in the Fire Services as a fire fighter recognised in Fire Services. OR Intermediate Level Certificate OR Level 3 Certificate in Fire Science, Operations, Safety and Management (IFE) with Four (4) Years minimum experience in the fire services as a fire fighter recognised in fire services. OR Fire Officer Certificate issued by old Transnet Training Centres with Four (4) Years minimum experience in the Fire Services as a fire fighter recognised in Fire Services. OR National Certificate: Emergency Services Supervision - Fire and Rescue Operations SAQA 64390 with Four (4) Years minimum experience in the Fire Services as a fire fighter recognised in Fire Services. OR Candidates without - formal qualifications Min 7 -Years' experience in a Fire Services as a Fire Fighter.
