Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience
A relevant teaching qualification with Physical Sciences as a major (preferable at secondary school level).
At least two years' relevant experience working in a science laboratory at school or tertiary institution.
Good knowledge of laboratory procedures, preparation of experiments, and handling of scientific apparatus and chemicals for meaningful teaching experiences for Senior and FET Phase students.
Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities
Teaching & Learning
Support lecturers and students during practical sessions through preparation, setup, and assistance and coordinates supplementary sessions if needed
Demonstrate the use of laboratory equipment and guide students in conducting experiments.
Curriculum Development & Alignment
Assist in preparing materials and equipment aligned with curriculum requirements for practical lessons.
Assessment & Feedback
Assist lecturers in practical assessments and provide support to students during experiments.
Student Mentoring & Support
Guide students during laboratory work and assist those who missed practical sessions.
Support large groups to ensure correct procedures are followed.
Compliance & Ethical Practice
Ensure adherence to safety regulations and proper handling of chemicals and equipment.
Maintain ethical standards in laboratory practices and record keeping.
Cleaning and storing of apparatus and materials in appropriate storage.
Maintaining a safe laboratory working environment for lecturers and students
Professional Engagement
Collaborate with lecturers and other staff to ensure effective laboratory operations. Quality
Assurance and Continuous Improvement
Ensure all equipment and materials meet required standards and are maintained properly.
Continuously improve laboratory systems and processes.
Academic Administration and Governance
Maintain accurate records of laboratory activities, stock, and equipment usage.
Assist in budget planning and procurement processes.

Manage inventory, ordering, and storage of laboratory materials and equipment.

Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head of Department.
Competencies
Appropriate disciplinary content knowledge in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, and Life Sciences.
Strong organisational and planning skills for preparing practical sessions, managing laboratory schedules, preparing experiments and demonstrations effectively.
Technical skills in handling laboratory apparatus, chemicals, and scientific equipment
Good communication skills (verbal and written) for the effective facilitation of practical sessions, as well as for supporting lecturers during laboratory-based instruction.
Problem-solving skills in identifying faulty equipment and resolving practical challenges.
Administrative skills for accurate record keeping, stock control, ordering supplies and manage inventory
Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and hazard management, as well as commitment to safety standards.
Ability to work collaboratively with lecturers and students.
Ability to work independently
Basic computer literacy for administrative tasks.
